Monsey Community and City Information

Monsey is a hamlet located in the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York. It is about 30 miles away from New York City.

Monsey is a suburban community with diverse residential areas ranging from single family homes and contemporary mansions to apartment buildings all surrounded by green wooded areas. The main roads passing through Monsey are route 59 and route 306, which intersect and form the downtown area of the community. Public Transportation in Monsey is provided by the buses of the Transport of Rockland (TOR.)

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Monsey has a population of more than 14,000 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 2.2 square miles. It is located at an elevation of over 500 feet above sea level.

The racial demographics of Monsey are 92.82% White, 4.32% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 2.86% of the population.

Monsey has more than 2,900 households. The median income for a household in the hamlet is $45,194, and the median income for a family is $45,911.

Monsey has a large Jewish population and is one of the biggest Hasidic communities in the New York Metropolitan Area. Monsey is home to plenty of Jewish organizations, synagogues, Yeshivas, businesses, and kosher shops and restaurants to accommodate its local Jewish population.

Monsey has plenty of areas and facilities for recreation as well as a lot of unoccupied green land. Manny Welder (Viola) Park is home to the Ramapo Tennis Center and features eight tennis court, handball courts, softball fields, playgrounds, and trails for jogging and biking in a nature area. Orchard Hills Park includes tennis courts, handball courts, ballfield, playground area and restrooms. Monsey Glen County Park offers trails in a densely wooded environment. Monsey is full of diverse wildlife, with local turkeys, squirrels, rabbits and white tailed deer roaming through the parks and unoccupied lands of the village.

Monsey is home to the Lifeplex Health Club, a state of the art sports facility which includes a swimming pool, fitness gym center, sauna, locker rooms, café, tennis courts, studios for dance and aerobic exercises, and rock climbing area. The nearby attached facility of Sport-O-Rama includes ice rinks and hosts ice skating ice hockey events. Together, Lifeplex & Sport-O-Rama make up the best sports facility in Rockland County with a large variety of programs and activities.

Monsey is home to Elmwood Elementary School and Grandview Elementary School of the excellent East Ramapo Central School District.
